A Lovey Of Color

When did your child attach to a stuffed animal or "lovey" as we call them? I can't really remember when Claire did but I feel like it was really early - when she just started walking - that she had Wella in her arms (sure enough, I found a post with her spooning Wella at a year old). And then, fickle lover that she was, she switched her undying devotion to Teddy. Teddy, who fits in the crook of the arm even better than Wella ever did, started out white and was given to us by someone at a baby shower. I think it was probably just an afterthought to accessorize the gift box because I remember it being on the outside of the bag looking all cute and sweet. Little did the giver know that this pristine, white teddy bear would be loved and carried around so much (and to so many places! So far she's been to Tennessee, Colorado, California, and Missouri.) that she would end up an ugly, dull gray color. I've bleached her, Oxy-Cleaned her, and drowned her in stain spray, but the bear just won't get rid of her over-loved-tarnished-gray-pallor.

So it was with much hope and expectation that Charlotte would bond with a lovey that was NOT white. Of course she has had a Wella in her crib since she was born (we have 2 of them from the days when Claire was smitten with her) and Charlotte, of course, doesn't touch her; she hasn't even once picked her up that I can recall. I actually thought that she'd never attach to a stuffed animal, but lo and behold at around 20 months she started asking for a specific animal every night at bedtime. Her name is Sheepie. And, you guessed it, Sheepie is no black sheep. She's pure, sparkling white. Not for long, though, not for long. Before I know it I'll have 2 dull gray lovies on my hands to drown in useless laundry soaps.

(Any lovie cleaning advice is most welcome.)

My nephew was very attached to his blankie early on; my niece not so much. My sister had back-up blankies, but he saw them once when he was sick and she was doing lots of laundry. From that day on he would carry around all three! Even at 10, I think the blankies are still around.

My boys both still have theirs...and guess what? Diddle's is (well used to be) WHITE! Nugget's is yellow....now super dingy. maybe we should dye them a different color? I wonder if they'd still love them as much??
